AB: Congratulations, El Beau! So deserving of the title!
EB: "Sir" from now on ? ... No - even better, if everyone could refer to me as "Lord and Master," ...
AB: We are so lucky to have you skating with us and reffing our scrimmages, what keeps you motivated to get your a$$ to every practice?
EB: Fear, Annie ! Fear that you'll hurt me. It's real.
AB: WFTDA recently released changes to the rules, how do you predict it will change the game this season?
EB: I anticipate Players Cutting / Refs blowing their whistles quickly / Players getting off the Track (Un-cutting) / Opponent Teams getting upset.
Players being allowed to leave the Penalty Box, if they think they're totally right that they should be allowed to will likely lead to both some awesome and awful moments.
AB: What is your favourite update to the rules?
EB: The addition of the 114 Casebook Scenarios is great.
(But, ya forgot to ask me what I hate about the new Ruleset. ... I guess I oughta cut back on all the hate, in general.)
But, seriously, they've closed a few specific loopholes, and made a few good changes.
However, since they've radically reduced the wording of the Rules, and the 114 Scenarios aren't nearly every possible scenario, there are missing puzzle pieces. Should one / can one look to the previous Rules for them when necessary ?
AB: What are your derby goals this season?
EB: Teach some peeps how to be Refs. And, as always, improve - a wish and a need.
AB: What is your favourite derby memory?
EB: I'll spare you the tired old story that all Derby Refs have of being a 1st Yr Ref, and blowing one's whistle as the same time as an experienced Ref to make the exact same Call; and, just skip to ...
(*insert cryptic EL Beau message here then skip along to…)
Also, there are moments when - in spite of not being entirely awesome during Practices, one outdoes themselves (skating-skills-wise) in the moment, during an actual Game.
AB: What are some of the challenges Refs face that your league mates may not be aware of?
EB: Keeping track of the overall goings-on in a general area, while evaluating a specific thing you're looking at, and then some other specific thing happens nearby, ... ... ...
AB: For someone thinking about wearing stripes this year, what advice could you offer?
EB: We know Derby better than we used to. We can teach it better, now.
Also, if you join Derby, you gain a family.
AB: Everyone is dying to know, if you could have any super power, what would it be?
EB: Coma ! The Power of Coma ! If I could just sleep for a decade or two every now and then, wake up, do a hedgehog-esque evaluation, decide whether to hang out for a while, or go back into another multi-decade coma, ... ... ...
