AB: Although you have been playing derby on PEI for a couple years, you just recently joined Bootleg City. How do you like it?
EM: I love it! It provides me with the competitive edge that I love (yes, I'm a little competitive ) Everyone has been so welcoming and I'm thrilled to be on the track with some new players as well as some of my teammates from the original RRnRD travel team.
AB: Can you share some of your derby history?
EM: I've always sought things "outside of the norm". I've dabbled in traditional athletics my whole life but have never experienced anything quite like Roller Derby. I attended an Open House in early 2012 and signed up for FM. I played the 2012, 2013 and 2014 seasons with the Twisted Sisters and RRnRD Travel Team! In 2015 I played with the Twisted Sisters and this season for the 1st time I am playing with the Moonshine Maidens! Which is so exciting for me to be reunited with many of my previous RRnRD Travel Teammates!
AB: You have had your fair share of injuries. Do you have any advice for skaters returning after recovery?
EM: Take your time. Listen to your body, you know it best. Heal - you'll thank yourself for it later. Cross train, stay active, get strong!
AB: We start our season this month, what are you most looking forward to?
EM: ALL OF IT!
AB: What position do you prefer to play and why?
EM: Definitely Blocker. I've been trying to push myself to jam a bit more and it is feeling a little better, but I'll always be a Blocker. It's just where I feel right.
AB: This is your 5th competitive season. How has roller derby impacted your life?
EM: Yes 5th season! It's impact my life with strength, joy, competition, injury, friendship, challenge, fun, travel, belonging, heartbreak, and lots of love!
AB: What skating skills are you currently working on?
EM: Everything. I honestly feel like ALL of my skills could be polished. There are so many things I don't do well. Sometimes at practice I'll pick someone who I think is really good at something in particular and I'll follow them around and try to do whatever it is as awesome as they do it. I don't think anyone ever notices me doing this ;)
AB: What is your favourite derby moment?
EM: Honestly? That Twisted Sisters vs. Moonshine Maidens bout at Credit Union Place that went into overtime!
AB: This is your first season playing as a Moonshine Maiden. How are you feeling about your upcoming adventures on the black team?
EM: I am feeling - Excited! Honoured! Accepted! Challenged! Pushed! ALL of the things. Today, my heart is busting.
