AB: Congratulations on the February title! It's so awesome to see a freshie killin' it!
WJ: Thank you so much! I’m bursting with excitement!
AB: You obviously come from a sports background. What sports have you played and how does it translate to roller derby?
WJ: I’ve been involved in many sports. I mainly focused on soccer, basketball, hockey, and snowboarding. Being an athlete has helped me with balance, footwork, those hockey stops, and the importance of getting low. Snowboarding has helped me with my 180 jumps and not being afraid to fall.
AB: When we scrimmage, you skate as a blocker and a jammer. Do you have a preference for either position?
WJ: I just love it all! I’m making a point to learn both positions thanks to some good advice from some goons.
AB: You just participated in Muddy River Rollers' Winter Warpath. What breakthrough moments did you experience?
WJ: Hahah this is ironic. Literally when I broke through the pack I had a moment. All day I was nervous about playing that scrimmage to the point I almost didn’t play. After complaining to some vets(who are amazing people) they reassured me I’d be fine. (more than once) I decided to play, I jammed first and I broke through the pack. I think that’s when I could breath again and I realized I can do this.
AB: What skating skills are you working on?
WJ: All of the skills! I’d like to work on walking/jumping around on my toe stops and quicker starts.
AB: Transitioning from the Learn to Skate Program to playing roller derby, are you getting a good feeling of the rules and strategies?
WJ: I feel like the learn to skate program has prepared me for the transition. Shout out to Mocky, Di Harderest, and all the vets for their help and support.
AB: You will soon discover that roller derby is really good at gobbling up all your time, are you ready to give'r all ya got?
WJ: I’m Givin’er!
AB: Even though you are new to our league, it feels like you have been with us all along. How are you enjoying the derby family?
WJ: Aww right in the feels. I love the derby fam. Everyone has been so accepting and just awesome. I can’t wait to get to know everyone on a more personal level.
AB: What is your favourite part of this sport so far?
WJ: Hitting people of course. Kidding, sort of. Honestly, the sport itself is not at all what I initially thought it was. I had no idea how much strategy is involved. I’d have to say that is my favourite part because it is challenging to me. I’ve never witnessed a sport where you beat the hell out of the opposing team and then when it’s over everyone is smiling and dancing around each other yelling MVP MVP MVP!!!! It’s beautiful.
AB: What are your derby goals for 2016?
WJ: So many goals.. Get on a team, work on fitness, learn the game, keep challenging myself, be involved, and have all the fun.
