CQ: I really don't even know what to say. It's pretty exciting to be chosen, I'm still kind of in shock!
AB: You joined Bootleg City this year, what kinds of roles have you taken on?
CQ: I started coming to practices in the summer since I haven't skated in YEARS. It was a great opportunity to get some practice in, and meet/watch all the girls. I volunteered at a few bouts, and have recently joined the board of directors as the Fundraising and Sponsorship Director. I'm excited to be involved in the continued growth of the league!
AB: What drew you to this sport?
CQ: The crazy-amazing people involved in this sport and the physical/emotional strength they show every time they put on skates.
AB: How has roller derby affected your life?
CQ: It makes you stronger, not just physically, but mentally too. Getting knocked on your ass is draining, but getting back up every time is key. Having physical goals also helps you take off skate training more seriously.
AB: Your kids SlingSHAWk (10) & Killer Kaia (7) have just finished our junior derby program, how did they do?
CQ: They did AMAZING!! They just got their first skates this summer, and did some skating outside, but they were still very new to all of it. They've gotten comfortable on their wheels, and feel comfortable with falling safely(which still happens quite a bit). Watching all of the juniors grow and learn was great. I can't wait until they start again in January.
AB: What have been your biggest skating challenges?
CQ: lol, everything. It's great though, something that is a challenge the first time gets better every time you do it. For me, it's definitely not trusting my legs, and being okay with falling. Backwards skating has also been a struggle, but I'm getting more comfortable with it (even though it doesn't look pretty).
AB: Are you asking Santa for any derby upgrades?
CQ: I got a good used set of gear when i started, and upgraded a few things at first, I did get an early present of new toe stops :) The kids needed more upgrades to gear (knee and elbow pads), so that was on their lists.
AB: Who (or what) inspires you in your new derby life?
CQ: What: Overcoming challenges. Each new skill is a challenge, and a life lesson to never give up, because you never know when you'll overcome it (but you will!) Who: Each and every vet/coach/ref in the league, they started in the same place I am, and look at them now. Also, all of the Fresh Meat I started with, because we've all learned a lot.
AB: If you could have any super hero power, what would it be?
CQ: The one I've always liked was transportation. Getting myself from home to work in the blink of an eye would be great. (To be able to create money would be nice too)
AB: What are your goals for the 2016 season?
CQ: To improve my strength, stamina and skills, and hopefully make the Betties!
